Delbert “The Iceman” Smith, a legendary figure in Kansas dirt late model racing, has built an extraordinary career spanning more than five decades. Hailing from Wichita, Kansas, Delbert’s passion for racing was ignited by his uncle, Arkie Findley, a respected racer in his own right, along with his brother Lonnie. Inspired by their influence, Delbert began competing in the 1970s and quickly made a name for himself at iconic tracks such as 81 Speedway in Wichita and Fun Valley Speedway in Hutchinson.

Over the course of his storied career, Smith has amassed more than 300 feature victories, including 20 National Championship Racing Association (NCRA) wins and 11 Midwest Dirt Late Model Series (MDLMS) victories. His championship résumé includes the NCRA title in 2001, a co-championship in 2018, and MDLMS championships in 2011. In 2023, Delbert added another prestigious achievement by capturing the DirtCar High Plains Kansas Dirt Late Model Championship, further solidifying his reputation as one of the most consistent and competitive drivers in the region.

Among his most remarkable accomplishments is his success at the Hutchinson Grand Nationals, where he claimed Late Model victories in 1985, 1993, and 2020, setting a record 27-year gap between wins—a testament to his longevity and adaptability. He also captured the Modified division title in 1988, showcasing his versatility behind the wheel.

Recognition for Delbert’s lifelong contributions to motorsports has followed. In 2022, he was inducted into the Wichita Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2026, he will receive another distinguished honor with his induction into the Belleville High Banks Hall of Fame, further cementing his legacy at one of dirt racing’s most iconic venues.

Even after decades of success, “The Iceman” continues to prove he is far from finished. In 2025, Delbert captured the Sooner Late Model Series finale at Enid Speedway, closing out the season in victory lane. He ultimately finished second in the 2025 SLMS points standings, trailing only his son, Dan Smith, in a memorable father-son championship battle that highlighted the strength and depth of the Smith racing legacy.

Beyond the trophies and accolades, Delbert Smith’s impact on the sport extends to mentorship and family. His guidance has played a pivotal role in shaping Dan Smith’s successful racing career, and together, the Smith family continues to inspire and influence the Kansas dirt racing community.

For fans looking to relive Delbert Smith’s unforgettable moments, performances such as his victory at the 64th Hutchinson Grand Nationals in 2020 stand as enduring reminders of why “The Iceman” remains one of the most respected and beloved figures in dirt late model racing.
